Singer Confidence 7469Q Sewing MachineThe Singer Confidence 7469Q Quilter sewing machine is not only value priced but comes with bonus accessories that make quilting easy for beginners and takes your purchase dollars even further.

This machine was running around $399 around the end of 2009 (and that was a sale price!) but the price has dropped significantly making it a great deal for a feature-rich quilting sewing machine.

Singer Confidence 7470 Sewing Machine Review

Singer Confidence 7470 Sewing MachineFor sewing beginners interested in quilting and a solid starter machine  (or are simply addicted to decorative stitches), the Singer Confidence 7470 sewing machine is worth a look. It’s also a hit with more experienced sewers replacing an older Singer machine.

Its foundation is a heavy-duty metal frame (although, don’t expect the Singer style of years gone by – there are still some plastic parts and accessories) and described by Singer as an “electronic sewing machine which will be appreciated by experienced and novice sewers alike”.

Janome Magnolia 7330 Sewing MachineThe Janome 7330 Magnolia Computerized sewing machine is one of the least finicky machines for beginners (so say other users!).

It is the top of the line in the series and as I read over the features and functionality, I knew I’d just seen nearly identical performance in another machine review – the Janome AQS 2009.

Both machines are great for quilters, beginner or experienced, but whereas the AQS was built for portability, the 7330 is a full size sewing machine.

This compact machine includes a selection of features geared towards quilting.

Little things like blanket stitches, a drop feed dog lever, a start/stop button and the ability to have the needle stop in either the up or down position as you decide all add up to a more controlled sewing experience.

Janome Magnolia 7318 Sewing Machine Review

Janome Magnolia 7318 Sewing MachineThe sturdy, mechanical Janome Magnolia 7318 sewing machine is one model in a line of affordable machines for beginners that deliver the same state of the art technology and precision that has earned Janome such a solid reputation from its more expensive products.

It’s also known for smooth stitching and ease of use. It’s still portable but heavy enough to stand up to the bulk of thick fabrics and quilting layers. The aluminum cast body stays rigidly in place while you sew and the good sized work space allow your hands to freely work around the machine arm.

How Many Built In Stitches Do I Need?

Built In Sewing Machine Stitch ChoicesEven beginners notice one thing right away – every machine prominently advertises the number of stitches offered. It’s common to ask yourself, “How many built in stitches do I need?” Your eyes will start to glaze over just contemplating the options.

“Hmmm… a nice, basic machine with 10 stitches. I think I’ll take it.”

Getting Started

Looking for just the right sewing machines for beginners? Here are some helpful tips in getting started. Keep these few things in mind and you’ll find the perfect machine whether for yourself, a family member, or a youngster in your life who is eager to learn. We’ll make finding the right machine as easy as possible.

  • Don’t waste your money on “kiddy” machines and don’t be fooled into thinking you need all the bells and whistles; a quality machine with a zig-zag stitch and buttonhole capability is a great start and capable of performing a wide variety of tasks for general and craft sewing.
  • Quilting and embroidery are more specialized and there would be different operations to consider for these specialties.
  • Do buy the very best quality machine you can afford (digital machines are nice but not a necessity)…even if that means biding your time and buying second hand. It’s terribly frustrating trying to learn a new skill with poor tools. (My mother’s machine, now about 35 years old, is still going strong!)
